Joanna Powell Colbert

This painting by Joanna-Powell-Colbert touches me deeply. A woman holding the cauldron of creative fire in her hands and offering it open-heartedly. I feel that is my role in life!

“Creativity belongs to the artist in each of us. To create means to relate. The root meaning of the word art is to fit together and we all do this every day. Not all of us are painters but we are all artists. Each time we fit things together we are creating—whether it is to make a loaf of bread, a child, a day.” Corita Kent

The Creative Cottage was inspired (four years ago this month!) by my keen desire to create a magical realm where women could circle and share, create and converse, write and paint, cry and laugh. It was a huge risk. I didn’t have “two nickels to rub together” and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing…but I knew I had to do it!

I had to. Even though I didn’t have the slightest clue about owning my own business, creating a blog, or inventing classes. Even though I didn’t know if you would come share it with me.

I had to try. I had to leap. I had to dream. I had to pray. I had to TRUST.

And you came…you brought the gift of your friendship, the joy of your friendship, the solace of your friendship.

You came…to make art and write stories and create books. You came…and opened your hearts wide and danced in celebration of our magical tribe.

Thank you! With all my heart…thank you! You bless my life every single day. The laughter, the love, the FUN we share lights up my life!

And like Shiloh Sophia’s Cosmic Cowgirl Creed

“We wear wild like a badge over our hearts. We do community like it’s a blanket wrapping us up. We create and create and create some more. We love and yell and muse and eat chocolate. We hold space like it includes the moon and the stars which of course it does. We are linked with a red thread blazing new trails and connecting us to old ones. We are addicted to insanely outrageous cowgirl boots. We dance with abandon, sparkles, and huge laughter. We are Cosmic and amazing and uniquely US.”

We are outrageously wonderful dames–we live our lives with style, with attitude, and with heart!

I’ve got it bad!

Staring off into space–check!

Lost in the ozone–check!

Disinclined to do housework, dishes, or laundry–check!Dull women

Yup–I’ve got it bad! SPRING FEVER!

The only antidote is ENJOYING IT!!!  BASKING IN IT!!! CELEBRATING IT!!!

AND going off on an “explore.”

“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.” Alan Cohen

“Go ahead into life, full-blooded, courageous and leap for the adventure. But you must do it soon—before the summer of your youth has cooled off into caution. You are magnificently charming—and you come like a torrent. But you will be spent on the futility of little things. You are not a watercolor. You are carved out of life—and there can be no petty hesitancies about you.” Ruth Reichl

“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.”  Rumi

Lately, I’ve felt my seasonal sap rise, my heart quicken, my soul quiver with new energy and purpose. I’ve always been immeasurably inspired by nature; blossoms returned to the frost blanched twig, speckled eggs in the rag-tag nest, the moon filling to an almost impossibly brilliant girth in the star-splattered desert sky.

Full Moon At Camp

I feel myself, alternately, speed up in a tizzy of spring fever and slow down to enjoy the unfolding wonder of wildflowers. Welcome-stone-

I find myself lost for hours digging in the garden or utterly absorbed in a new book. My Sweetheart and I go off tramping a bit more and my dog Gus Gus On A Rug insists on more frequent camping adventures–especially those that include splashing in water! waterfall 4I get itchy to make create art, make more handmade books, paint old furniture, MAKE A MESS!!! Paint Smears

And have more FUN in general!

“The most significant gifts are the ones most easily overlooked. Small, everyday blessings: woods, health, music, laughter, memories, books, family, friends, second chances, warm fireplaces, and all the footprints scattered throughout our days.” Sue Monk Kidd

I think I’m FINALLY learning to “stop and smell the roses” in my life, to celebrate the small moments, to cherish magical sparks of the divine!

I’m so grateful for the wonderful circle of women who come play and share and support one another through life & changes, triumphs & challenges, dreams & realizations at The Cottage.

As I come up to my fourth year anniversary of being the Mistress of Merriment at The Creative Cottage, I feel I have found my niche, my tribe, my calling…

right path

There is a river running through my soul and its music and power, its solace and strength guide me deeper into the lush adventures of my life. I step into it full of trust and excitement–where will it carry me? What will I learn along the way?

“For me there is only the traveling on paths that have heart…and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length-and there I travel looking, looking breathlessly.”    ~Carlos Castaneda

Take a few moments to refresh your own soul, to play, to make art, to get out in nature, to let the river roar through your soul and carry you to new moments of joy!
